Master Luis Ucelo, owner and teacher at Ucelo Martial Arts spoke to Examiner about Martial Arts as a skill but also a way of life. Ucelo, second generation Martial Arts Master, was trained under the prestigious Master Jun Chong in Hollywood, California. Master Chongs school in California has been a training platform for celebrities such as Phillip Rhee (Best of the Best), Simon Rhee, Thomas Ian Griffen (Karate Kid lll), Sam Jones (Flash), Dolph Lundgren (Rocky lV), Bill Wallace (Full Contact Champion), Sugar Ray Leonard (Boxing Champion) and of course Brad Pitt, who rented Chong's school to train for his movies.

Luis Ucelo, participating in many tournaments over the years under the, "World United Martial Arts Organization" accumulated many titles such as; Champion, level black belt in traditional forms, weapon champion and sparring champion for junior and adult divisions.

Ucelo Martial arts, established in 1988 by Grand Master Miguel Ucelo in Guatemala, father and teacher to Luis Ucelo; brought their tradition to Phoenix, Arizona. Luis Ucelo, with his devotion, dedication and the love for martial arts opened his own martial arts school, Ucelo Martial Arts

Ucelo, took Examiner in depth about the study of martial arts, the meaning, art forms, and tradition. Have you ever wondered what is said when a martial arts professional belts out what seems to be a yell, when performing a certain punch or move? The term is, "Kiap"; viewed as an expression of inner power. Ucelo stated, " all martial arts were created as self defense for survival, it is "Martial"; meaning structured, disciplined and a way of life to be healthy and grow old." Ucelo teaches his students a traditional practice of martial arts with the philosophy and meaning behind it. He teaches forms that are over 1000 years old with a modern touch such as; Karate ( Japanese base), Tae Kwon Do ( Korean kicking art), Hapkido (Korean self defense, joint manipulation), Jujitsu (resilient style of floor fighting), Judo (Japaneese art), Capoeira (Brazilian style). Ucelo teaches his students first and most importantly, respect. He likes to inspire, educate and create champions, inside the mat and outside in life.

Ucelo, when speaking about the misconception that training in martial arts will create violence he so perfectly stated, " A diamond is very precious, with many sides. Martial arts has many sides as well, teaching abilities that later become virtues in life, through respect and discipline."
